Our goal is to support and provide resources for individuals battling mental illness by (1) educating and spreading awareness to the public on what it means to have a mental health condition, (2) establishing “DS Open Forums” wherein people can speak openly in a safe space with others who struggle, as well as with their loved ones, (3) promoting mental health success stories to spread optimism, and (4) creating community events for everyone to enjoy being social with one another in an enjoyable and stigma-free environment
- Mental illness can affect anyone of any background regardless of gender, socio-economic status, ethnicity, religion, sexual orientation, education level, etc. The DSM-5 lists nearly 300 types of mental illnesses and approximately 1 in 5 adults in the US experience a mental illness in a given year. About 18% of US adults live with an anxiety disorder and nearly 7% have major depression. These are the types of facts that people need to be informed about and hopefully compassion and understanding will follow.
- DS Open Forums will be support group meetings wherein every person that would like to speak will receive an opportunity to share whatever is on their mind. The Moderator introduces the rules and expectations and can pose conversation topics if necessary
- Spreading success stories, however large or small they may be, through social media will be a key component in shifting the mindset people have about individuals struggling with mental health conditions. The stories will show that the illness does not necessarily hinder your potential. They will promote hope for individuals battling difficult times.
- Events such as scavenger hunts and 5K charity runs will not only promote healthy living, but will also raise funds for Delete Stigma which will be used for further outreach and support services
